Summer Opportunities

Reading Skills and Speed Reading Programs are offered through the University of Alabama College of Continuing Studies.  These individualized programs include engaging online instruction, independent reading in great books, and a skilled encouraging teacher.  These programs cover ages preschool through 12th grade.  Enrollment is limited, so please inquire early.  You may get more information or register by calling 1-800-964-9974.

 

Driver's Education Courses Available locally during the summer break:

1.  Tennessee Valley Driving School (private instruction) with Brian Gafford who has taught the course in local public schools since 2003 (currently teaching at James Clements)--contact number 256-497-6053

2.  Sparkman High School in Harvest, Alabama (classroom instruction and driving practice)  Call 256-852-2557 to get more information.  Their website will also include information about classes in the near future.

3.  Athens Bible School in Athens, Alabama (classroom instruction and driving practice)--contact Coach Murrell at 256-232-3525 for more information.

 

Stanford University is offering some pre-collegiate studies for high  school and middle school students.

     Stanford Summer College Academy--for ages 16-19..a six week course, three weeks online  

     three weeks on campus with a choice of 21 classes--can get college credit for this

 

     Summer Humanities Institute--for grades 10-11--three weeks on campus including sessions 

     with faculty members and concluding with an opportunity to produce a research project

 

     Stanford Summer Arts Institute--for grades 9-11--focus on the intersection of arts and

     sciences...multilayered and interdisciplinary including music, visual design, performance,

     architechture,drawing...a choice of 6 primary courses are offered

 

     High School Summer College--ages 16-19--take courses (from 145 options) and get college

     credit from Stanford

 

      Summer Institutes High School program--grades 8-11--take one intensive course in a tightly integrated program

    

 

     Stanford online high school--grades 7-12--take a single course or multiple courses
